Just spent a week in Tangier with my girlfriend - our honest take
We got back from Morocco a couple of weeks ago and spent the first part of the trip in Tangier before heading down to Chefchaouen and honestly I feel like I need to push back against some of the negative stuff I'd read beforehand. My girlfriend was quite anxious about the whole thing because she'd seen some blog posts and forum comments warning about aggressive touts and shady characters near the port and medina, so we nearly cut Tangier out altogether. So glad we didn't. Yeah you get people approaching you, especially around the ferry terminal and the main square, but a firm la shukran and keeping walking did the trick every time, never once felt physically threatened or like we were in actual danger. We wandered all over the place, did the American Legation museum, got lost in the kasbah for hours, even walked back to our riad near the Petit Socco around midnight after some live music and it was absolutely fine, just cats and a few locals heading home. I'd read a really balanced article on Unique Travel Morocco before we left that explained the situation well without scaremongering, basically said use common sense and don't flash valuables and you'll be grand, which turned out to be totally accurate. So for anyone googling is tangier safe while planning their trip, from our experience it's absolutely fine, just treat it like any other big city and you'll probably end up loving it like we did.
